Enjoy a full day of creativity and take inspiration from the flora and fauna found in our venue’s garden as well as your imagery and imagination, plus take cues from the work of renowned Surrealist artist Arshile Gorky and explore working with colour, abstraction, memory and more…
Our Art in the Garden workshop will begin with an introductory presentation before we head downstairs to our outdoors location where you can respond to the plants, flowers and buildings you’ll encounter as well as your colour, texture and pattern.
We will also discuss the life and work of Arshille Gorky (1904-1948) and how green spaces provided him with a new source of inspiration alongside ideas shaped by memory, dreams and imagined spaces…
Venue: Our venue for the day will be at Open Door Berkhamsted, 360-364 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 1HU.
Open Door Berkhamsted is approximately 12 minutes walk away from Berkhamsted station. Cross Oak Road Bus Stop is 2 minutes away and is served by the routes 500 and 501 as well as local services. Limited on-street parking is available with the nearest public car park just a short walk away in St John’s Well Lane, Berkhamsted, HP4 1HA.
Course level: intermediate / advanced – some drawing, painting and other art-making skills useful. If you’re a beginner, please look at our Learn to draw course.
Course materials: You will need a sketchbook (A4 or A3) and drawing materials. You may also want to bring your acrylic painting and / or watercolour kits or other media you like working with. Paper will be provided. A suggested materials list will be sent to you once you’ve booked your place.
Your course tutor: Mario Lautier Vella has been teaching art since 2011. A qualified art tutor and professional artist, his award-winning work has been shown in a number of exhibitions both in the UK and abroad. His work can be found in collections across the UK, the Netherlands, Malta, North America, Australia, and Canada. Find out more
