Art Project: Outer Space

Our starting point for this week’s project was the 59th anniversary of the first launch of humankind into space which took place on April 12 1961. Major Yuri Gagarin was successfully launched into space from Kazakhstan and spent 108 minutes orbiting the earth travelling at 27,000 kilometres an hour before crash-landing back to Earth.

Ideas around space travel, life in outer space and the space race shaped the creative output of a number of artists as well as writers, musicians, fashion designers and other creatives throughout the 1960s. However ideas centred on outer space can be discovered much earlier in art, literature, music and cinema (and even back to prehistoric times if you delve into theories about aliens and ancient civilisations…)
