Art Project: All At Sea / Day of the Seafarer
This week’s Art Project – All at sea…
This week’s brief commemorated the 10th anniversary of Day of the Seafarer which fell on Thursday 25 June.
Day of the Seafarer is an annual, global event that highlights the work of the thousands of people who play a vital role working on the sea or coast – from fishermen to coastguards, dockers to sailors, as well as those employed in the import/export trade, immigration and security fields. This year’s campaign aims to publicize how seafarers should also be regarded as key workers, emphasising how their work is especially critical during the pandemic to ensure the UK remains stocked in vital goods and medicines.
Artists took their cue from ideas, people and objects linked to seafaring – from sea-craft big and small, the workers associated with oceanic industry or leisure, to memories of a favourite bay or port you’ve visited. They could also consider coastline architecture, rough seas and gentle waves, maritime insignia and other paraphernalia, legends / stories about seafaring and the sea, or dive in deeper and consider colours, textures and life found above and below water…
Here’s a selection of artwork and prepatory studies made by some of the Art Project course artists taking part in the project.
Look out for another gallery of work coming soon…
