Explore the working methods and themes of Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) – the French post-Impressionist artist and founding member of art collective, Les Nabis, whose colour-rich work switched focus from cosmopolitan city life to unconventional, uncanny depictions of home life.
Coinciding with a major retrospective of Bonnard’s art at Tate Modern, take inspiration from an artist renowned for work rich in colour yet tinged with a sense of unease, as Bonnard’s avant-garde approach challenged classical ideas of standard themes including landscapes, still lives and interior scenes.
Bonnard – The Provençal Carafe, Marthe Bonnard and Her Dog Ubu (1915)
We will examine Bonnard’s life and influences including Gauguin, Monet, Japonisme, and his wife Marthe Bonnard who appears in the majority of his work. We will also consider Bonnard’s working methods including his use of drawing and painting, as we explore working from memory, from photographs and with live models (nude and clothed).
Please note, due to venue restrictions, paintings can only be made using acrylic or watercolour.
Bonnard – After The Bath (1910)
