Assignment: Horsing Around…

This week’s brief had an equestrian theme and centres on photos of nudes with horses.

The nude figure has been depicted alongside horses since ancient times – from Greek gymnasts performing on horses as seen on Ancient Greek pottery and sculpture to horse tenders in Ancient Persian frescoes and charioteers found racing in Ancient Egyptian tombs. The 13th Century legend of Godiva climaxes with the noblewoman riding naked on a horse through the city of Coventry and has been depicted by a number of artists, whilst 19th and 20th Century military statuary combining naked men and horses can still be seen in a number of European cities, with sculptors taking their cue from ancient warriors and ideas of bravery…
