Discover how to draw the human head and face – where to begin, what to consider, how to work with individual facial features and how tone and colour can bring everything together…
The course covers both a naturalistic approach to portraiture, as well as modern and contemporary techniques.
Working from a selection of photos, we’ll explore anatomy, proportions and individual facial features to create an accurate likeness. We’ll also consider how artists have experimented with portraiture techniques to create work centred on an emotional state, personal experience, notions of identity or abstraction.
This step-by-step course combines essential theory, demonstrations and practical exercises delivered via Zoom. You’ll have time to practise during the session and afterwards for homework. As the course progresses, submit your work to our online gallery and see how your fellow artists are also progressing.
Course level: the course is aimed at artists with previous drawing experience. If you are a beginner, please look at our Learn to Draw course. If you are unsure of your suitability for the course, please get in touch.
Your course tutor: Mario Lautier-Vella has been teaching art since starting his teaching career in 2011.
A qualified art tutor and professional artist, portraiture is a key part of Mario’s own practice. In 2019, he debuted a series of portrait paintings from his ‘The Two Of Us’ series in Malta and London. His work can be found in collections across the UK, the Netherlands, Malta, Australia, North America and Canada. Find out more
Course feedback
“‘Learn to Draw Portraits’ has introduced me to a whole range of techniques for creating a realistic head and then enabled me to move on to more expressive styles. It was so helpful to work through the head in stages – not too overwhelming – and the examples you showed us were always spot on. It was great to see and talk to the rest of the class on Zoom as well to get your one to one advice in the break out rooms. Being able to see everyone’s work on the weekly gallery was really helpful and added lots of ideas. Can’t wait for the follow up painting course.” Vanda
“Just wanted to say thank you for a brilliant and inspirational course. I really enjoyed it and I have most certainly learnt a great deal. Think I can now approach a portrait with more confidence. Looking forward to the portrait painting course very much.” Pauline
“I absolutely loved the course. Your talks were fascinating and you guided us through drawing the different parts of the face week by week, working towards drawing a full face. For the last few weeks we covered different styles of drawing portraits. The homework reinforced the work covered in each session. It has improved my observational skills and I look at faces, anywhere, in a different way.” Pamela
