A 9 week, step-by-step painting course that covers everything you need to start painting like a pro. 

Working with acrylics, we will look at how to start your painting practice – what you’ll need, how paint works and how to create paintings using different techniques including alla prima and  classical / indirect painting.

We will also consider how artists have used paint throughout the centuries as we look at a number of paintings for ideas and inspiration.  Handouts also provide you with additional information.

Your course also includes a midweek research day trip to one of London’s major art collections. The date will be discussed during the first session.

Your course takes place at Bennetts End Community Centre in Hemel HempsteadBennetts End Community Centre is located at Gatecroft, Hemel Hempstead HP3 9LZ.

There are plenty of free parking spaces available at The Queen’s Square on a first-come, first-served basis as well as nearby on-street parking.  Bennetts End is also served by a number of local bus routes. See map

Course level: beginners or anyone who wants to refresh their painting skills. Drawing skills essential – if you’re a newcomer to art, we recommend you do our Learn to draw course first.

Course materials:  You will need your own painting kit – we will provide you with a materials list once you’ve booked on the course. Paper will be provided.

Your course tutor: Mario Lautier Vella has been teaching beginners how to paint since starting his teaching career in 2011.

A qualified art tutor and professional artist, painting is a key part of his practice. Working with oils, acrylics and mixed media, In 2018, Mario won the Watford Area Arts Forum Art Challenge Harrington Trophy for a new series of 50 small paintings gathered together and presented in a vintage photo album (click here for more info).
