Life Drawing and Painting home study course gallery – No. 3

Assignment: Photographs by Corinne Day

Our starting point this week was a selection of images by the British photographer Corinne Day (1962-2010) who made her name in the 1990s when her fashion and editorial photographs appeared in a host of magazines including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, The Face and i-D. Her early photos of Kate Moss propelled the model into superstardom, whilst her documentary / social-realist shots of super-slim models in dingy, derelict and unkept surroundings proved genre-defining and helped to establish both the Grunge and Britpop music scenes. Her work was also criticised for its ‘heroin chic’ aesthetic that was derided for appearing to glamorise drug use, addiction and poverty.

Day continued to take impromptu, candid snapshots of fellow models, partygoers and people she encountered. Her photography juxtaposed haute couture with ramshackle rooms; impoverished-looking models in exclusive clothing – a fresh antidote to the slick, highly-stylised photographs of the late 1980s-early 1990s, which also suited the imperfect, eclectic fashion trends emerging at the time. Day died of a brain tumour in 2010 aged 48.

Here’s a selection of artwork and prepatory studies made by some artists taking part in the session.

Look out for another gallery of work coming soon…
