Enjoy a full day out at the Royal Academy in Piccadilly and explore ideas around portraiture and presence in two bumper exhibitions – Lucian Freud: Self Portraits and Anthony Gormley
Meeting in the morning, we will arrive at the RA at opening time allowing us to enjoy our first exhibition before it gets too busy. Our day begins at the newly opened exhibition Lucian Freud: The Self Portraits – a collection of over 50 drawings, prints and paintings where the late, great artist responded to his own image in a variety of styles, with work spanning his entire career.
After lunch at local pub, The King’s Head, we’ll return to the Royal Academy for a visit to Antony Gormley – a retrospective show by one of the UK’s leading contemporary sculptors whose work explores ideas around the body, the body in space and a sense of self. The exhibition features a selection of Gormley’s now-iconic body cast figures as well as new installations made especially for the RA’s gallery spaces, plus sketchbooks and drawings.
End your day out exploring the RA’s permanant displays or with afternoon tea in the cafe.

Event details
We will meet in the courtyard by the main entrance of the Royal Academy at 10am in time for the Lucian Freud exhibition opening at 10.15am. Nearest tube stations: Green Park (Victoria and Piccadilly Lines) or Piccadilly (Bakerloo and Piccadilly Lines).
The November Social is free. However, you will need to pay for:
- Your travel to and from the Royal Academy
- Your exhibition ticket(s) (see below)
- Your meal and drinks at the pub.

– Please buy your ticket for the 10.15am time slot to ensure first entry into the Lucian Freud exhibition.
– Please buy your ticket for the 2.20pm time slot for the Antony Gormley exhibition
– If you want to join us later in the day, we can see you in either exhibition or at lunch – but please let us know you’re coming especially if you want to join us for lunch
– You can also join us for just the exhibition part of the event if you don’t want to come for lunch afterwards.
