Explore how artists have painted the human head and face using a number of ideas and techniques
The course covers both a naturalistic approach to portraiture, as well as modern and contemporary approaches.
Working with a selection of curated photos, we will explore different ways of painting a portrait, from creating a realistic likeness or something more imaginative, taking cues from anatomy, form, colour, tone and various ways of working with paint.
We will also look at how painters have experimented with portraiture and created work shaped by artist-sitter dynamics, emotional states, notions of identity and more.
This step-by-step course combines essential theory and practical exercises delivered via Zoom. You’ll have time to practise and start painting during the session and then complete your piece for homework. You can also submit your work to our online gallery and see how your fellow artists are also progressing.
The course centres on painting with acrylics but the techniques covered can also be used with oil paints.
Course level: the course is aimed at artists with previous drawing experience and is a follow-up course to our Learn to Draw Portraits course. Your course tutor: Mario Lautier Vella has been teaching art since starting his teaching career in 2011.
A qualified art tutor and professional artist, portraiture is a key part of Mario’s own practice. He enjoys working with ideas around identity and the masked / unmasked face; in 2019, he debuted a series of portrait paintings from his ongoing ‘The Two Of Us’ project in Malta and London. His work can be found in collections across the UK, the Netherlands, Malta, Australia, North America and Canada. Find out more
